At this point, I feel like we need some sort of warning label on Treaty Oak Revival shows that one in 5000 fans is bound to leave with a serious injury.
No fault to the West Texas band, of course. While their ongoing tradition of slinging beers and cups during “Boomtown” may be frowned upon by some more sophisticated concertgoers, the band certainly isn’t to blame for how over-the-top and rowdy some fans have taken the moment.
But as the story goes, there’s always one guy in the crowd that’s gotta ruin it for everybody. Unfortunately for Treaty Oak, they just always seem to attract their fair share of hooligans at every show, with people slinging everything from trash cans to signs to massive cup stacks, and most recently, lawn chairs.
Over the weekend at Treaty Oak’s West Texas Degenerate tour stop in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday, September 19, a fan took it upon himself to launch a full-on metal rental folding chair into the crowd at Truliant Amphitheater. Annnndd unfortunately for the young man’s digital footprint, people, of course, filmed the incident, including a close-up shot of his face as he sent the chair absolutely flying into the front of the crowd.
What exactly would possess someone to chuck a near-lethal lawn chair into a crowd of thousands of unsuspecting fans is beyond me— but unfortunately it’s not exactly unexpected. By some miraculous stupidity, this is not the first time a metal chairs been flung like this.
In fact it was only just last month that I covered the same exact story, and people ran to the comments to make jokes comparing the situation to Morgan Wallen’s Broadway rooftop incident.
Luckily, that time around the chair was more what I’d deem as a soccer-mom camping chair, aka much lighter and leaving the poor girl it hit only slightly shaken up, with one clip showing her laughing the incident off like a champ. However, this time around, the beach chair-sized rental that I could only assume would hurt much more ended up leaving another fan with a concussion-shaped souvenir.
Underneath the now-viral TikTok clip, the top comment from @itshaliegosnell includes a picture of the chair-flying victim lying down in what appears to be a hospital/urgent care bed after the show, stating: “I hope these people feel real proud of themselves meanwhile I have a concussion.”
Another girl @Baylee_134 also claimed in the comment section that she got hit, writing, “fun and game until you’re the one being hit with it- aka me.” As expected, the remainder of the comments were filled with people questioning the act and whether or not this counts as a form of assault.
And for everyone who watched that clip with their jaws hanging wide, yes, throwing a chair into a crowd could possibly have some pretty serious legal consequences. According to my good friend and No. 1 source for unsolicited legal research, Google, “throwing a chair at a concert can be legally classified as assault, battery, or reckless endangerment.”Of course, any actual charges would depend on the specific situation and what the people involved decide to pursue.
I have a sneaking suspicion this wasn’t exactly a one-time occurrence at the concert, either, as those green metal lawn chairs apparently became a staple of the crowd’s antics throughout the night. Another clip making the rounds shows fans stacking multiple chairs high into the air mid-show, creating a lopsided tower of metal doom that, unsurprisingly, eventually came crashing down into the crowd.
At this point I truly have no other words except to advise anyone planning to go to a future Treaty Oak show to be on the lookout for flying objects and maybe wear some protective headgear. With that being said, they’ll be back on stage this Thursday, September 24, in Syracuse, NY, followed by another stop in Darien Center on Friday night and Cincinnati on Saturday.
