While a Luke Bryan and Tim McGraw crossover has never been on my radar, the byproduct of McGraw singing one of Bryan’s biggest hits is actually golden.
Both leading male artists dominated the early and mid 2000/2010’s, but with McGraw starting his career much earlier in 1990, the two have always been in different playing fields. However, there was actually a time back in 2015 when McGraw was jamming backstage to Bryan’s 2009 hit, “Do I.”
The song, which has since had a bit of a resurgence after going viral on TikTok, was initially Bryan’s lead single off his second album, Doin’ My Thing. It was also surprisingly co-written by the Georgia native alongside none other than Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood (who have joined forces in the past for live performances together).
6 years later, McGraw took a swing at the track alongside his band backstage during his Shotgun Rider tour. Harmonizing acoustically during this stripped-down rendition in St. Louis, the crew escaped a pre-show thunderstorm with a pretty epic performance.
While it doesn’t exactly replicate the same belt-out energy of the original, there’s a gorgeous charm about the raw vocals echoing throughout the dressing room as McGraw serenades his guitarist next to him. Hilariously, he ends the jam session feeling the sensual mood of the song, promising his bandmate, “Gonna go find a girl for you, and I’m gonna bring her back to you.”
While this performance may just be the outcome of the guys aimlessly messing around while waiting for the storm to roll through, it ended up delivering a seriously great, must-watch take on the song. Check it out here:
