“You Really Did Make That Your Own” – American Idol Contestant Jesse Findling Wows Judges with Grappling Performance of Rascal Flatts’ “Bless The Broken Road”

The American Idol top 14 contestants led the crowd in a night of worship for yesterday’s March 30 “Songs of Faith” episode.

Ahead of this upcoming Easter Weekend, the show leaned heavily into the religious theme, following the initial cut of 6 contestants announced at the beginning of the show, from the voting at the Hawaii rounds. Luckily, viewers wisely decided to put their bets on 19-year-old Long Island native Jesse Findling, giving him another opportunity to absolutely dominate the stage.

Currently a junior at Binghamton University, Findling’s voice is far beyond his years with an effortless vocal run; he hit every note gorgeously in his performance of Rascal Flatts’ “Bless The Broken Road.” The 2004 single from Rascal Flatts’ third studio album was not only a hit success for the band, leading to five weeks spent at number one on the Hot Country Songs charts, but also was a perfect choice for Findling to showcase his capabilities as the next potential idol winner.

Originally recorded in 1994 by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the track has seen many iterations from several artists throughout the years, including Idol judge Carrie Underwood, who even performed the song live alongside Flatts’ lead singer, Gary Levox, at the show during her season in May 2005. Luckily, Findling did the Idol alum proud with his rendition, with Underwood gushing afterwards, “That song is such a singable, beautiful song, I know somebody else who sang it a couple of decades ago on the show. But when people say you made it your own, I mean you really did make that your own.”

Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan echoed these praises, noting their astoundment at the young singer’s impressive vocal chops, with Bryan encouraging him to “keep pushing and dig more” as the competition continues to tighten up.

Findling originally stole the hearts of America with his vocal stutter and touching story of finding an outlet through music, where he can escape his self-consciousness. While not a traditional worship song, he noted his admiration for the track and it’s widespread message saying, “I love the line, ‘God bless the broken road that led me straight to you,’ and I feel like that’s a lyric in the song that everyone can feel, and God leads us to the right people in life, whether that’s friends or family.”

Unfortunately, fans will have to wait yet another week to find out if Findling made his way to the Top 12 in the competition, as this season 24 continues to run into some roadblocks. Brand new to the show, American Idol adapted to the growing importance of social media, offering voting via their pages on Twitter/X, Instagram, Facebook, etc. Host Ryan Seacrest told the live viewers last night that for the first time in Idol history, they’d be postponing the results to ensure 100% accuracy and continue to count all of these new methods of voting.

The show (and hopefully Findling) will return next week, where the Top 12 will perform songs from the theme “90s Judges’ Song Contest” on ABC.
