Here we go again…
Chris Young is making the rounds on social media again, and unfortunately it’s not thanks to a viral song trend or an act of kindness. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some mid 2000’s Chris, but the “Tomorrow” singer doesn’t necessarily hold a current reputation for stellar live performances.
A TikTok User captured a snippet of Young “serenading” the crowd at the Concert in the Corn festival this past Saturday, August 29, with his 2015 No.1 hit, “I’m Comin’ Over.” Based on this Wisconsin performance, though, I think Young needs to pack it up and start “gettin’ home” for a little R&R.
The original video alleges that Young’s poor vocals on the live rendition of his radio hit were due to too much liquid courage backstage. They noted in the caption, “maybe he was just super tired…he even said, ‘if I forget the lyrics to my own song, just pretend that I pointed at you to sing.”
While he very well may have had a few too many drinks backstage, I don’t think that’s the whole culprit in this…rusty performance.
Now, as many people pointed out in the comments, his vocals here certainly aren’t the worst thing in the world. However, they’re also not quite what they used to be. He struggles to hit some of those higher notes with the same power, and his trouble staying on beat with the backing track only adds to the lackluster sound quality, although that very well could be the result of a delay in his earpiece.
I hate to say it though, guys…this is nothing new. Fans have been calling out Young for YEARS over these consistently faulty live renditions. In fact, here’s a video from just last year around the same time with everyone spewing the same accusations, and the caption stating: “When you pay over a hundred dollars to see Chris Young, and he’s drunkedly drunk drunk,” and another just a few months earlier in spring 2024 where they blamed the poor performance on “sound issues.”
This time around, the comment section was filled with theories about what might be going on with everything from possible inebriation and a lack of sleep to more audio issues or simply worn-out vocals. Others wondered whether this might just be the new reality for his voice at this point in his career:

Given how many years these concerns have followed him, though, I just hope he recognizes if and when it’s time to give himself a chance to recover. This has truly been the era of artists stepping away from their careers to focus on themselves (for whatever reason), and there’s certainly no shame in taking some time off to come back feeling 100% again.
But hey, there were also plenty of fans who thought he still sounded phenomenal, so who am I to sit here and spew advice? At least someone was having a good time.
