It just keeps getting better with age.
Monday marks the 28th anniversary of the release of George Strait’s Check Yes Or No, Strait’s 33rd number one hit and an absolute staple of 90’s country.
Check Yes Or No is one of the most decorated singles in the long and illustrious career of King George. The song spent four weeks at number one on the country charts in November and December of 1995. The record swept the award season, winning five Single of the Year awards, including those from both the ACM and the CMA. It is now certified 3X platinum.
Perhaps no one song more perfectly encapsulates the career of one of the greatest to ever do it. The story of two young kids caught passing notes turned star crossed lovers, Check Yes Or No is the definition of what we all love about 90’s country.
Simple yet quality songwriting, mixed with a classic country production, has helped make this song a hallmark of throwback playlists for years. You’d be hard pressed to find a 90’s nostalgia playlist that doesn’t include this one.
For those who want to hear the king play this one live, George recently announced nine new stadium stops on his tour with Chris Stapleton next year. If you haven’t made it to see him live, make a point to make it out to one of these. Strait has teased retirement several times in the past, and with him getting up in age, you never know if this might be your last time to see one of the true legends of country music perform.
Everyone loves a trip down memory lane. Give this classic a listen:
