When Toby Keith passed away on February 5 due to a long battle with stomach cancer, it shocked the country music industry. The “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” singer was mourned by millions of fans and colleagues alike over the past two months, receiving a posthumous induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame as well as an appearance on HARDY’s newest “HIXTAPE” album.
Today, it was announced that Lainey Wilson, Brooks & Dunn and Sammy Hagar will perform a tribute to the country legend during this year’s CMT Awards which airs on Sunday, April 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET live from the Moody Center in Austin, Texas. The show will be broadcast on CBS as well as Paramount+.
The trio will be backed by Keith’s band along with Lukas Nelson and Roger Clemens during the special performance. It’s unknown, however, what song or songs the trio will play as of now, but it’s safe to say that you will not want to miss this tribute to the late country legend.
This year’s CMT Awards will be hosted by Kelsea Ballerini for the fourth year in a row and features 14 first-time nominees including Zach Bryan, Tyler Childers and Koe Wetzel. Lainey Wilson is tied for the most nominated at the show with three separate nominations in different categories.
In addition to the performance, a one-hour tribute to Keith, titled, “CMT Music Awards Celebrates Toby Keith” will premiere at 10:00 p.m. ET on April 11 on CMT.
