Two legends, one stage.
Back in January of 2019, a plethora of some of country music’s biggest artists all took the stage to honor Willie Nelson for a once-in-a-lifetime concert event titled, Willie: Life & Songs of an American Outlaw.
Taking place at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, the historic event featured performances from Chris Stapleton, Eric Church, Jamey Johnson, Jason Isbell, Jimmy Buffett, Sturgill Simpson, Sheryl Crow and more, but perhaps one of the most interesting performances of the night came when Willie was accompanied by George Strait to perform their collaboration, “Sing One with Willie,” off The King’s thirtieth record, “Honky Tonk Time Machine.”
What made the performance that much more special was the fact that this was the first time the pair had ever performed together. Why it didn’t happen sooner? Well, who really knows, but coming in at 72 and 91 years of age respectively, with decades upon decades of hit songs in each of their lengthy, celebrated careers, I’m just happy it finally happened.
