According to an announcement shared by her family on her official Instagram page, country music icon, actress, and philanthropist Dolly Parton “died peacefully today in Nashville, Tennessee.”
At 80 years of age, Parton’s legacy spans not only entertainment, but also business, authorship, and charity. It is for this reason that her final live performance, held on March 14, 2025, is such a fitting glimpse into what the star meant to friends, family, and fans alike.
Just 11 days after the death of her husband, Carl Dean, Parton took to the stage one last time at Dollywood’s 40th anniversary opening day to perform “Celebrate the Dreamer in You.”
Offering an apt farewell, Parton left her audience with a final set of both lyrics and advice. “Keep the faith, you’ll have your time to shine,” she sings. “Let nobody block your path, allow nothing to distract the passion and desire inside your heart.” Yet the track’s relevance for Parton’s legacy goes beyond its content alone. First released in 2010 to honor Dollywood’s 25th anniversary, the release pays homage to the artist’s involvement in the tourism business and its impacts for her native Sevier County, Tennessee.
“Celebrate the Dreamer in You” also echoes Parton’s role as an author and her 2013 book Dream More: Celebrate the Dreamer in You. Here, according to the book’s description and reiterating lyrics from her eponymous song, she encourages readers to “dream more, learn more, care more, and be more.” With book proceeds going towards the Imagination Library, the shared title and themes also recall Parton’s humanitarian influence.
Per Parton’s Instagram, at her request, “a small, private service will be held for immediate family. Dolly’s fans and friends from around the world are encouraged to pay tribute to Dolly on social media by tagging @DollyParton or by leaving a message at www.dollyparton.com. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library at www.imaginationlibrary.com”
