I’d just like to let it be known that I’m the number one cheerleader for an officially released Koe Wetzel ’90s country cover.
While it may come as a shock to some, the Texas native known for his grungy red-dirt rock-country blend has been known to throw a few curveballs on stage, covering some country classics. In the past, he’s put an epic spin on Sammy Kershaw’s “Queen of My Double Wide Trailer” along with Toby Keith’s “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” and while this is way outta left field from the ’90s country genre, he also did a bad*ss rendition of Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like An Eagle.”
Fueling the fire of fans begging for more covers from this iconic time period in country music, Wetzel returned this weekend with his cover of everyone’s favorite hit, David Lee Murphy’s 1995 “Dust On The Bottle.” This past Saturday, August 22, Wetzel headlined at the Allen County fair in Lima, Ohio, packing the grandstands with well over 6500 fans.
Given this was a one-off show from his current 2026 The Night Champion Tour, Wetzel was able to have some leniency with the set list and pivot from highlighting his June 2026 project. Switching things up, he added in this incredible rendition of Murphy’s fourth single and first number one hit.
Before kicking off the track, Wetzel very honestly let the crowd know, “You gotta help me sing it in case I mess up the lyrics.” Of course, everyone reciprocated, screaming the lyrics in the background of the now-viral clip, but it seems Wetzel did a pretty stellar job on his own.
Now, while I don’t expect Koe to ever actually put out a full ’90s cover album, he has hinted at wanting to put out a full classic country project at some point in his career. Back in 2020, he tweeted that he wanted to do so by the age of 30, but given he’s now 34 we asked him about any future plans (maybe by the age of 40?) and he responded, “maybe when I get a little older and don’t have anything else to talk about or try to infuse anything else, maybe I’ll make a traditional country record.”
At the least, hopefully we can at least get him featured on some sort of tribute project in the future. As for the rest of the internet, many user in the comment section echoed their admiration for the performance:
