What a trio.
Last night, at the Songs and Stories of Dean Dillon tribute concert, legends such as George Strait, Vince Gill, Ronnie Dunn and Sammy Kershaw performed along with the likes of current stars, Cody Johnson, ERNEST and Zach Top to honor the legendary singer/songwriter.
Dillon has written a mile-long list of hits including Strait’s “The Chair,” “Easy Come, Easy Go,” “Marina Del Ray” and “Ocean Front Property” and most notably “Tennessee Whiskey.” The Tennesee native has also cut songs with the likes of Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Alabama, Brooks & Dunn and Keith Whitley.
With Zach Top absolutely crushing a cover of Whitley’s “Miami, My Amy” and Strait performing “Here For a Good Time” and “Unwound,” there was stiff competition for the performance of the night. However, the most memorable one might have been Top, Riley Green and Justin Moore coming together to cover Hank Williams Jr., Waylon Jennings and Ernest Tubb’s “Leave Them Boys Alone.”
The 1983 collaboration from the trio has always remained one of the most underrated in Bocephus’ deep discography, somehow only peaking at #6 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart despite the star power.
Green and Top took Hank Jr. and Waylon’s place in the song respectively before Moore made a surprise appearance, taking Tubb’s verse before the trio finished out the final chorus together and absolutely nailed it.
It’s safe to say classic country is officially back, and I am so here for it.
