One of the most legendary trios to every share the stage.
Back in 2004, country music icons Toby Keith, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard came together for a tremendous rendition of the latter two’s 1983 classic, “Pancho and Lefty,” for the TV special, “Willie Nelson & Friends: Outlaws & Angels.”
Originally penned and recorded by the great Townes Van Zandt in 1972, the western-outlaw tune was later popularized by Nelson and Haggard, who recorded their own version to be the centerpiece of their collaborative album by the same name. Their version eventually became a number one hit on the billboard country charts.
Seeing those two perform together is already extraordinarily iconic- then add one of our more contemporary country music legends into the equation and it becomes a near-perfect representation of what true country music meant to be.
Since Toby Keith’s tragic passing in 2024, any reminiscence on his work has naturally become more bittersweet, and it’s truly wonderful to watch him, in his prime, performing alongside two of the other greatest to ever do it.
The look on Keith’s face when Haggard begins to sing is priceless; he’s clearly having the time of his life, and it appears that Shotgun Willie and The Hag’ are just as well.
