This one hurts.
As we gear up to learn who the 2025 Country Music Hall of Fame class will be tomorrow, I wanted to to take a look back at the 2024 inductees, more specifically: Toby Keith.
Serving alongside John Anderson (Veterans Era Artist) and James Burton (Recording and/or Touring Musician), Toby was entered last year as the Modern Era Artist just months after his tragic passing on February 5th. While the HOF election rule that states you can’t vote in anyone within a year of their death, we learned Toby was chosen before he passed away when the voting closed on February 2nd.
The devastating news? He was supposed to find out on February 6th, the day after he died from his two-year long battle with stomach cancer at the young age of 62.
“This year, we anticipated receiving the names of our final inductees on February 6th. As we know now, we woke up that morning to the heartbreaking news that our friend Toby Keith had lost his long battle with stomach cancer.
Sarah Trahern, the CEO of the Country Music Association, expressed her sadness for not being able to inform Toby of the honor at the announcement ceremony:
“My heart sank knowing that we missed the chance to inform Toby while he was still with us. But I have no doubt that he is smiling down on us, knowing that he’ll always be, — quote — ‘as good as he once was.’”
Although it’s now been a little over a year since we lost the big dog daddy, it still hurts. And knowing he wasn’t there to experience how much country music and its fans truly loved and appreciated him still doesn’t sit right with me.
Nonetheless, Toby will be remembered as an American patriot, a charitable philanthropist, and an inspiration to many. His legacy will undoubtedly carry on through what is left behind of his storied career, marked by 21 albums and 20 number-one singles, as well as his dedicated support for children diagnosed with cancer, active-duty military personnel, and veterans.
