Chris Stapleton can do what few artists can’t- make stadiums, arenas, and theaters feel like intimate, Friday-night bar rooms.
Back in 2022, the ten-time Grammy winner honored country music legend, Vince Gill, at his CMT Giants special by performing the beloved “Whenever You Come Around” in front of Gill, himself.
Written by Vince Gill and Pete Wasner, the 1994 hit reached #2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and has since become a true classic, covered by both legends like Willie Nelson and contemporary superstars like Luke Combs.
Prior to his performance, Stapleton singles Gill out in the crowd, telling him:
“I moved here wanting to be you. You’ve had the courage to encourage me… I love you from the bottom of my heart.”
There’s clearly mutual love and admiration from both stars as artists and people- the CMT “giants” influence can absolutely be heard in much of Chris Stapleton’s discography.
Unsurprisingly, his performance exudes a heartfelt intensity and soulfulness that complements Vince Gill’s craft without taking anything away from the song itself. It’s clear he’s trying to respectfully honor the artist and the song, not necessarily make it his own version.
There’s been plenty of Vince Gill covers done wonderfully, but this one may just take the cake. If you’re not a fan of either artist, this performance may just turn you into one, it’s truly that incredible.
