Alright, so let’s get into the context here, because although completely true, I can understand how the headline could sound a little misleading.
Just a few days ago, the legendary “Country music YouTube dude,” Grady Smith, posted his hour long interview with one of the biggest Country stars in the genre, Luke Combs. While there’s surely a lot to unpack from a conversation that long, one specific thing that stood out to me was Luke Combs discussing his love for the (in my opinion) massively underrated band, 49 Winchester.
If you aren’t aware, Luke Combs is taking the band out on the road this fall for the European leg of his world tour. When asked how he discovered them, Luke says that Muscadine Bloodline put a story up a few years ago and after listening to them, he thought “man, these guys rock.”
Grady Smith tells Luke that he thinks lead singer/guitarist Isaac Gibson has “probably the best live voice of anyone doing music right now,” and that’s where Luke admits he’s “probably gonna catch so much grief for saying this” but he “sometimes” has a hard time with Americana because he simply “loves a singable chorus and a singable song.“
One of the reasons Luke says he loves 49 Winchester and chose to bring them out on tour is because “those guys marry that stuff together so well. They have such great melodic structure and the chorus’ are big and singy but the lyrics are very heavy and I think that’s what drew me to their music so much.”
Make no mistake, Luke *never* says he dislikes Americana. In fact, it would appear he actually has a strong taste for the sub-genre, but specifically from artists such as 49 Winchester, whom can still also have “great melodies.”
I must admit, it’s been a pleasure watching Grady Smith grow and become a fierce, recognizable voice within Country music. From Morgan Wallen to Luke Combs, Grady has now had the privilege of interviewing some of the biggest artists in the genre.
