Back on September 9, 2023, Corey Kent took to TikTok to tease a new song titled, This Heart. The post blew up, garnering 3.4 million views, 310,000 likes and over 59,000 favorites. Many fans were clamoring for the song to be released on the spot.
In the meantime, the Wild As Her singer released his nine-track acoustic album, ‘23. Despite the success of the album, This Heart was still at the forefront of many fans’ minds.
Kent finally announced the song’s release on Jan. 2.
Kent expressed how blown away he was by the response to the song over the past few months, “Some songs take on a life of their own. They demand to be put out into the world. I’ve been lucky enough to experience that a time or two. But never like this…our most highly anticipated release ever and it’s not even close. You guys have waited patiently, and we promised you it would be worth the wait. Well, now this song is yours. Hope it makes you feel something.”
This Heart was written by Thomas Archer, Blake Bollinger, Jacob Hackworth and Michael Tyler and perfectly captures the feeling of despair following a breakup. The sultry, building intro and first verse give way to a rockin’ chorus, feeling like a satisfying slow burn with an excellent payoff.
The Oklahoman singer delivers an authentic look at the anger directed toward himself after loving someone who never felt the same.
“Damn this heart
And everything that comes with it
Damn this missing you every night feeling
I’d rip it out girl if I didn’t need it”
The bridge is particularly interesting when Kent laments “I got a problem, and it ain’t even you,” seemingly placing the blame on himself and his heart rather than his ex-lover. It’s an interesting diversion from the tired breakup song formula that solely places blame on the other leaving.
Kent will soon be joining Parker McCollum on his Burn It Down tour beginning in February. Upcoming dates include the following:
- 2/1 Peoria, IL
- 2/2 Huntington, WV
- 2/3 West Lafayette, IN
- 2/8 Kalamazoo, MI
- 2/9 Dayton, OH
- 2/10 St. Louis, MO
