Add MGK to the growing list of rappers trying to break into the country scene.
After a performance at Blake Shelton’s bar, Ol’ Red, during CMA Fest which included a cover of the Dixie Chicks’ “There’s Your Trouble” and an appearance from Jelly Roll on “Need a Favor” and “my ex’s best friend,” mgk is back with another country cover.
This afternoon, the Houston native released a cover of none other than Zach Bryan’s certified platinum hit, “Sun to Me” onto his YouTube channel live from Cheshire Cottage.
While I’m sure many will be quick to judge mgk for seemingly making the jump to country music along with the likes of Post Malone and Beyoncé, it should be noted that, like Post, MGK has had a long history of jumping between genres.
mgk started his career back in 2012 in rap, producing five albums between 2012 and 2019. In 2020, however, he made the jump to alternative, releasing “Tickets To My Downfall” and “mainstream sellout,” both of which were produced by Blink-182’s drummer, Travis Barker.
While I personally don’t think it holds a candle to Bryan’s original, it is a pretty fascinating cover nonetheless. MGK also added a personal touch and referenced his 2019 track, “5:3666,” on the first lyric, replacing Bryan’s “5:34 A.M., I was about to start my day” with “5:36 A.M.” and well, you know the rest.
We took to Instagram with the video just moments ago and here’s a look at some of the comments from our followers:
“He sucks. As a man and as a singer.”
“He is not Post Malone – country will not let you in bro.”
“You can view it negatively or you can view it as another way to expand the country genre and expand the audience of one of its biggest artists to more people.”
“Country’s cool again.”
As of now, the song is only available on mgk’s YouTube channel and is not available to stream.
