Maren Morris Says She Stands By Her “Insurrection Barbie” Clapback At Jason Aldean’s Wife: “It’s Not Offensive, It’s Funny”

Eons ago, wayyyyy back in 2022 (at least, it feels like forever ago), country music artist Maren Morris and Jason Aldean’s wife famously broke the internet with their heated social media feud.

Does the term “Insurrection Barbie” ring a bell? For those who don’t remember, the clapback became a highly viral moment in the two’s public catfight, which first spawned from a post by Brittany on Instagram of her putting on her makeup with the caption: “I’d really like to thank my parents for not changing my gender when I went through my tomboy phase. I love this girly life.“

The video started to quickly gain traction, and before Morris’ entrance into this debacle, her longtime country music friend and “Wasting All These Tears” singer Cassadee Pope first chimed in on Twitter calling out Aldean’s wife:

You’d think celebs with beauty brands would see the positives in including LGBTQ+ people in their messaging. But instead here we are, hearing someone compare their “tomboy phase” to someone wanting to transition. Real nice.

Now here’s when things started to really blow up. Morris piped in, responding to Pope’s tweet, saying, “It’s so easy to, like, not be a scumbag human? Sell your clip-ins and zip it, Insurrection Barbie.”

The remark then spawned Brittany’s infamous nickname among anti-Morris fans, who quickly began referring to her as “Karen.” The interaction caught a lot of traction online from the press, with other celebrities chiming in, and a slew of internet hate from both sides of the feud. But at least both ladies turned the opportune nicknames into merch lines?

Morris released her own charity T-shirt line with the phrase “lunatic country music person,” which raised over $150K for transgender rights organizations. Brittany embraced the Barbie comment as if it were a compliment, creating a merch line of “Don’t Tread On Our Kids” sweatshirts in the iconic pink doll’s Mattel font, donating the proceeds to help fight child exploitation and human trafficking.

Well, looking back on the now 4-year-old feud and her subsequent exit from the country music world, Morris opened up in a recent Rolling Stone article about her “Insurrection Barbie” comment and seems just as regretless as she was in 2022. During the interview piece released today, September 3, Morris boldly stated, “I’ll own it, because I just think it’s not offensive — it’s funny.”

She then shared a message for anyone who thinks otherwise: “I think that’s what chaps anyone’s ass who thinks it’s offensive, because, deep down, they’re like, ‘Damn, that’s good.” The “I Could Use A Love Song” singer also seems quite rooted in her decision to actively continue to voice her opinions, no matter what kind of effect it’s had on the trajectory of her career: “I never have a moment of, ‘Gosh, I would be in a much different place, a better place career-wise, if I had just played the game and kept my mouth shut and kissed the proverbial ring”

If anything, she says it’s given her a sense of “peace” and helped her feel a bit more “vindicated.” As she continues to celebrate the tenth anniversary of her June 2016 album Hero throughout the remainder of the year, she seems perfectly content with the niche fan base she’s acquired over the year and the intimacy of the ‘down-graded venue sizes’ she’s been playing recently:

“It’s almost like if you’ve graduated to arenas or stadiums and then you go to a lower cap, there’s a pridefulness of, ‘Well, that’s a failure.’ But it’s not.” Adding, “To still give your fans the experience of seeing you and giving them the escape, I think you can bite the bullet and play the smaller venue.” And now that her 2026 Dream Girl Tour has officially wrapped up, the 36-year-old says she is taking some time off to hang out with her freshly kindergarten-aged son and continuing to create “weird” and “off the wall” songs (her words, not mine).
