When Dylan Gossett released his debut EP, No Better Time, back in November, he put the country world on notice. The six-song EP contained Gossett’s first certified gold single, “Coal” along with “To Be Free,” which is quickly approaching over 20 million streams on Spotify alone.
Today, the Texan singer/songwriter looks to continue the hot streak from No Better Time with a brand-new, four-song EP, Songs in the Gravel.
Gossett announced the EP with the release of “Somewhere Between” back on March 1.
Songs in the Gravel contains the pre-released “Bitter Winds” and “Somewhere Between,” along with two brand-new songs, “If I Had a Lover” and “Finally Stop Dreaming.”
The EP, as a whole, once again proves why Gossett is one of today’s fastest-rising artists in country. From the reflective “Bitter Winds” to the romping, bluegrass-inspired “Somewhere Between” to the dreaming “If I Had a Lover,” the project feels incredibly authentic.
You can feel the additional polish and production present throughout Songs in the Gravel in comparison to Gossett’s first EP, No Better Time. There are heavy doses of fiddle, mandolin and percussion present that give the project the sound that many would expect from today’s alt-country giants such as Zach Bryan and Charles Wesley Godwin.
Though there is a fuller sound and production present in the project, the edge that was present in Gossett’s debut is not lost at all. The pre-released “Bitter Winds” is a shining example of this. Here, Gossett grapples with all of the new-found success that he’s experienced over the past year.
You get the feeling that he is simultaneously grateful for the audience he has procured while also feeling haunted by past sins when he sings, “I’m singing songs, the family sings along with my feet buried in the gravel, my heart buried in my wrongs.”
The same can be said about “Finally Stop Dreaming.” The driving fiddle in the intro gives away a primarily acoustic production in the verses. The weaving of the fiddle throughout the track sounds delightful while Gossett pines about his wife, singing “Lay me down, my dear, when I finally stop dreaming.”
Overall, Songs in the Gravel is yet another standout EP from Gossett. Between the backing from both Big Loud Texas and Mercury Records, the continued success of his first Top 20 hit, “Coal,” and the appearances at upcoming festivals throughout 2024, the sky is truly the limit for Gossett.
