Fair Warning: listening to Dylan Gossett’s new song Like I Do is a punch straight to the gut. But then again, heart-wrenching melodies are Gossett’s specialty, and his latest release, which dropped at midnight, is no exception.
Following his last more upbeat single Tree Birds, released on October 10, Like I Do takes a much more somber tone—though, as always, sad country music has a way of hitting the hardest. Earlier this March, Gossett teased the track on his TikTok, captioning the video, “This one’s about growing up and growing old.”
The Austin singer-songwriter has a knack for deeply emotional acoustic instrumentals, raw lyrics, and a voice that is unmistakably unique. The song is centered around the nostalgic memories of growing up, with the first chorus reflecting the sweetness of childhood, paired with acoustic strumming and a bluesy guitar solo. It follows a coming-of-age story as Gossett reflects on his teenage years and the sorrow that comes with growing older.
The emotional lyrics of the chorus capture Gossett’s painful reminiscence: “And I’m not a kid no more but without you, I just worry on, Am I in my way? Do you know I’m safe? Am I doing what I’m supposed to do? [oh what I’m supposed to do] Do you remember it like I do?”
As if the song isn’t enough of a tearjerker, he also posted a montage of home videos featuring himself and his family on Instagram, adding an even more personal touch. It ties in perfectly with the last few lyrics of the track: “Now I’m watching videos with dates on the corner…Mom’s holding the camera, Dad’s making us laugh. High chair, blonde hair, days don’t really last.”
As he continues to grow as a standout country music staple, Gossett is currently on his Back 40 Tour throughout the spring, with just a few shows left in the UK before heading back to the United States.
